Sharing our passion for smart communities
2017/11/20

Message from ASCA President Brook Dixon

A quick message to express my excitement and gratitude to be elected President at our recent AGM.

The last 12 months, working with retiring President Michael Whereat, the ASCA Board, and our wonderful community across Australia (and beyond), has been a great privilege. I can't wait for the next 12 months.

Aig thank you to Michael for his leadership, vision and collaboration - a boon for our association, and for smart community momentum more broadly.  We wish Michael all the best for his future endeavours. I'm sure it will mean great things for Australian communities.

I am passionate about smart cities, smart towns, smart regions and smart communities; passionate about good policy, modern regulation, innovation, new technology, and collaboration. And passionate about delivering better outcomes for people - sustainability, inclusion, productivity, empowerment, liveability and creativity.

It is a great honour and motivation to work with ASCA's members and partners who share this passion, who are leaders and champions, who are delivering great outcomes for their communities.

Hearty congratulations to all our members and partners who received funding last week through the Smart Cities and Suburbs Program. A great result, and I am sure more of our members will see their projects funded in future rounds.

I am pleased that ASCA's ongoing success has enabled us to engage our first full-time CEO, Laurie Patton, who will spearhead our efforts to deliver greater value to our members and partners, enhance our influence, build capability, and accelerate smart community initiatives.

Some of our priorities for the next 12 months include:

  • strengthening ASCA's advocacy role and policy leadership
  • increasing the gender diversity of our organisation, in membership, leadership, and participation
  • delivering an amazing Conference in Melbourne - 9-11 May 2018 - pencil it into your diary
  • supporting implementation of existing smart city and suburbs projects, and development of applications for Round 2 funding
  • enhancing member communication and engagement

I look forward to working with each of you to deliver these, and many other great outcomes in 2018.

Please do reach out to me by email at president@australiansmartcommunities.org.au if there is anything you'd like to discuss.

And thank you again for this remarkable opportunity! Let's make great things happen.
